ANDREW, G, Findlay. The Crescent in North-West China. London, The China Inland Mission, 1921.

8vo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front cover ruled and lettered in black, printed dust-wrappers; pp. xii, 113, [2, advertisement], p. 47 with Chinese characters (Hwei-hwei mottoes), plates after photographs; wrappers with loss at head and tail of spine and at upper outer corner; otherwise fine.
Very rare first edition of this investigation into the Hwei-hwei Muslims of North-West China, in Kansu Province in particular. The local missionary reports on Chinese Islam as modified by Confucianism, but opposed to Han China. The Hwei-hwei, nowadays subsumed under the term Uighur, were feared for their business and military prowess, and are still considered a threat to the central Chinese authority.
